Both Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson have offered diverse views on why the Knicks lose Game 3 against the Spurs, contradicting Mike Brown's claims about officiating.
In just his first address in his postgame media availability of Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals, Mike Brown immediately questioned the credibility of officiating.
The New York Knicks head coach was bewildered about how the San Antonio Spurs took 24 free-throw attempts in the second half en route to a 115-111 victory on Monday evening, compared to his team's eight lowly trips to the line.
"I never thought I'd be in the NBA Finals and see a team get 24 free throw attempts in the second half to another team's eight," Brown told reporters. "And I don't think I complain much about officials or the fairness when it comes to the free throw attempts.
"Maybe we were fouling, but they fouled too."
Although Brown believed the Knicks were on the wrong end of the officiating to close out Game 3, his two superstars appeared to view the loss differently.
Karl-Anthony Towns refuses to blame officiating in Game 3 loss
In his own media address, Karl-Anthony Towns does not necessarily view officiating as the main reason for their Game 3 loss.
For the star big man, turnovers and not staying committed to their game plan have ruined their chances down the stretch to get the job done at home.
Primarily, Towns and the Knicks tallied 13 turnovers, which the Spurs have completely capitalized on with 21 huge points.
"No, that ain't cost us the game," Towns, who dropped just 11 points across 38 minutes, said. "Turned the ball over, didn't execute, didn't do what got us 13 straight wins in a row. That's how you lose a game.
"We didn't do what we've been doing for 13. We decided to do something different, and it ain't gonna work. And throwing the ball away is a clear indication of how you're gonna lose the game, especially in the playoffs."
Jalen Brunson claims Knicks have fouled a lot in Game 3
Meanwhile, beyond turnovers, Jalen Brunson sees the Spurs' staggering free throws in the second half as reasonable after how they played too recklessly.
The East Finals MVP delivered another huge night with 32 points, but he believes that he and the Knicks were too careless to clinch Game 3 and move one more win away from New York's first NBA title since 1973.
"I think we turned the ball over a lot, first and foremost. But then also we were fouling a lot and put them at the line about 30 times. And with our live ball turnovers and I got them on transition. No, they were capitalizing off of those.
"So we were definitely fouling a lot."
With their historic 13-game win streak snapped, Towns, Brunson and the Knicks will look to respond in Game 4 to potentially secure the commanding 3-1 lead of the series.
