It’s hard to know how excited to be about the prospect of Geovany Quenda’s arrival at Chelsea. It’s been a year since the deal to sign him was agreed, but he had a heavily injury hit final season at Sporting since then.
Is the 19 year old ready to compete for first team minutes at Chelsea? Our record with signing wingers in recent years has been pretty dire. Quenda certainly has talent, but he looks raw even in Portugal. The Premier League is going to be a massive step up for him.

Simon Johnson’s piece for the Athletic is clear on what we can expect from Quenda: he will be in the first team squad, not loaned out. The injury was bad for his final season at Sporting, but did at least give him the chance to do his rehab at Cobham, where he “used the time to acclimatise to his new surroundings, including looking for a house.”
That should mean he gets the chance to shine at Chelsea right away – and given his competition, he should have a great chance of doing well.
