Too bad: Liverpool "locked in negotiations" over £25m gem that has accepted Anfield dream is over

Inter Milan and Liverpool remain “locked in negotiations” over the transfer of Curtis Jones, who looks set to leave the club this summer.

After another season of struggling to nail down a starting spot at Anfield, the Scouser is keen to test his luck elsewhere and is high on the list of priorities for Inter Milan.

Under Arne Slot, Jones was unable to start regularly despite Alexis Mac Allister’s poor form this season. Although Slot has been sacked and replaced by Andoni Iraola, it doesn’t appear to have any bearing on Jones’ decision to leave.

Now, it seems the only roadblock to Jones leaving is Liverpool and Inter agreeing on a fee.

Latest Curtis Jones to Inter Milan news as summer transfer draws closer

According to TEAMtalk reporter Graeme Bailey, Liverpool remain in talks with Inter Milan.

He reports: “Inter Milan remain locked in negotiations with Liverpool over Curtis Jones, and the England international has already committed to joining the Serie A champions despite a valuation gap between the clubs.

“Sources have confirmed that Jones has accepted his time at Anfield is coming to an end and is ready to embark on a new challenge in Italy after deciding that a move to Inter represents the ideal next step in his career.

“The 25-year-old has attracted significant interest from within the Premier League, with Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest all making checks on his situation in recent months.

“Jones has informed those around him that his preference is to join Inter and experience football abroad for the first time.

“That leaves the two clubs working to bridge a financial difference that is currently preventing an agreement. Inter have thus far been unwilling to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the midfielder.

“Indeed, sources can confirm that the Italian champions have offered around €25million (£21million), while Liverpool continue to insist that €30million (£25million) represents fair value for a player of Jones’ quality and experience.

“Inter’s stance is heavily influenced by the fact that Jones is entering the final year of his contract.”

Jones’ decision is understandable if not regrettable

While it’s disappointing to hear that Jones will leave the Reds this summer, it’s understandable why he wants to leave.

At 25, Jones has missed out on the World Cup this summer and realistically has two World Cups maximum left in his career. If he continues as a squad player for the next four years, he will likely not be selected for the 2030 tournament.

More than that, he just wants to play regular football for a Champions League club and he’s good enough to be doing so, if not for Liverpool.
