Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is still a summer target for Liverpool, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The 22-year-old would have been a good fit for Arne Slot, but following theappointment of Andoni Iraola, it would not have been a surprise if the Reds had cooled their interest.

However, speaking on talkSPORT about Merseyside club’s transfer plans, Jacobs said:

“Keep an eye on central midfield. Adam Wharton is a player really appreciated by Liverpool.”

Wharton will not be available at a low price

Reports suggest that Palace would want at least £80m for the England international, who played an instrumental role in the Eagles winning the Conference League.

Wharton put in a player-of-the-match performance in the final against Rayo Vallecano last month, and Palace would like to keep hold of him.

Attempts have been made to tie him down to a new contract, but no breakthrough has been found so far. His current deal still has three years left to run, so there is no immediate pressure to sell, and that will keep his price tag relatively high.

Liverpool will have competition from other Premier League clubs

Chelsea are said to have identified Wharton as a key target for the summer transfer window, but their plans could change if new manager Xabi Alonso prefers other options.

Manchester United have also been regularly linked with the midfielder, but their priorities are said to be West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes or Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, depending on whether the latter’s move to Manchester City falls through.

It does leave a path open for the Reds to make an approach for Wharton, if he is indeed still a leading target following the arrival of Iraola.
