As legal sports gambling expands and billions are wagered, new polling shows more Americans now see sports betting as harmful to society and to sports, even while participationβespecially among young adultsβcontinues to grow.
2. Trump Border Czar Vows To Send More ICE Agents Than 'You've Ever Seen' To NYC (patch.com) β New Yorkers are being warned to expect a surge of federal immigration agents after President Trump's border czar vowed to send more ICE personnel to the city. The move is a direct response to Governor Kathy Hochul's new law restricting ICE from masks, sensitive locations like churches and schools, and cooperation with local jails and police, raising tensions over how immigration enforcement will play out on city streets.
3. New Flood Barrier Takes Shape Along NYC Waterfront (patch.com) β Lower Manhattan residents and workers are seeing real progress on coastal protection as the first phase of the $200 million Battery Coastal Resilience project wraps up. The rebuilt and elevated wharf at The Battery is part of a multibillion-dollar effort to shield New York City's waterfront from sea-level rise and storms while preserving harbor views, public access, and key memorial spaces.
4. Sexual Assault Evidence Kits Protected Longer In NYC (patch.com) β New Yorkers should know that state law now requires sexual assault evidence kits, especially those involving minors, to be preserved longer and tracked more transparently, with hospitals and police facing stricter deadlines. The legislation, signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and championed by Brooklyn State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, also limits when third parties can request evidence destruction and empowers young survivors to control their own cases.
