Manchester United hold talks with top Liverpool target

Liverpool’s midfield is almost certain to be a major focus of the summer rebuild under Andoni Iraola.

The Spaniard has inherited a squad that badly lost its balance in the middle of the park during the 2025/26 campaign, with issues around control, defensive protection, and general lack of legs.

Despite that, there is no suggestion at this stage that Liverpool are in active talks to extend Alexis Mac Allister’s deal, which already runs until 2028 and leaves the club under no immediate pressure. The same goes for Dominik Szoboszlai, whose situation has been the subject of background discussions but, so far, without any concrete movement towards a new agreement.

DaveOCKOP.com exclusively revealed back in January that Liverpool had held fresh talks with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, with the 22-year-old believed to be open to a move to Liverpool.

Palace have Wharton tied down on a long‑term contract until 2029 and are braced for bids, meaning any deal would require a huge fee.

But predictably, Liverpool are not the only club wanting the midfielder.

The Athletic has reported that Manchester United have held talks with the Palace No.20:

“United are keeping tabs on several midfielders, having held talks on Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton among others.”

Liverpool’s interest, comes down to more than just adding another body to the squad. His ability to receive under pressure, progress the ball and cover ground without sacrificing composure ticks several boxes that were empty last season.

Crucially, he is still young enough to grow with Iraola’s project yet experienced enough in the Premier League to step straight into a demanding environment.

If Liverpool can win this race ahead of Manchester United and others, it would send a powerful message about where the Anfield rebuild is heading for next season and hopefully further beyond.
