Liverpool’s summer rebuild looks set to be shaped by more than just one or two marquee names, because there is a clear sense that this squad still needs work in key areas.
Reports have pointed to right-back as one of the positions under real scrutiny, especially with the club having been short of natural options at times and forced to lean on stop-gap solutions.
Conor Bradley was out of action since January with a knee injury that required surgery. Jeremie Frimpong has also had his fair share of injury issues in 2025/26.
That is where the Denzel Dumfries links become especially relevant. It was reported by Paul Joyce in that Liverpool spoke to Inter about the Dutch defender in January, although no bid or formal negotiation followed at that stage, and the move did not progress before the deadline.
Further reports suggested any realistic deal would be more likely in the summer, when the conditions around his release clause become more favourable.
However, it looks like the Dutchman is headed to La Liga instead. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Denzel Dumfries has already signed with Real Madrid:
“Denzel Dumfries has signed his official contract at Real Madrid after medical done last week. It will be valid for 4 years, same as Ibou Konaté – June 2030. Inter receive €20m.”
For Liverpool, Dumfries heading to Spain does not change the reality that this squad still needs reinforcing in several key positions ahead of next season.
A new right-back remains high on the agenda, with the club expected to scour the market for someone who can bring athleticism, reliability and availability to a role that has become a problem area over the past year.
Centre-back and midfield are also likely to be addressed as part of a wider refresh, especially if Andoni Iraola is given the backing to shape the team in his own image.
