Liverpool are in talks with sell versatile midfielder Luca Stephenson for a six-figure fee, following the 22-year-old’s two-season loan at Dundee United.

Stephenson returned to Liverpool at the end of last season, having seen his second campaign with Dundee United end prematurely due to injury.

After undergoing treatment at the AXA Training Centre the academy graduate is now on holiday while talks continue over his future.

This Is Anfield understands a deal is yet to be finalised but newly promoted Championship side Bolton are looking to complete the signing in the near future.

Having entered the final year of his contract this summer, The Athletic‘s James Pearce reports that Stephenson is expected to move for around £700,000.

Liverpool will also look to negotiate a sell-on clause into any deal to ensure a share of the profit in the event of a future move.

Bolton are not the only club interested and a number of their rivals are also exploring moves for Stephenson, who made 67 appearances for Dundee United over two seasons in Scotland.

Speaking to the Courier last month, the Sunderland-born midfielder revealed he is looking for a “permanent home” this summer.

“I’ve only got a year left on my contract at Liverpool, so I think the biggest priority for me is that, in my next step, I find a permanent home,” he explained.

“I’ve done three years on loan and have developed a lot. So I think the next thing needs to be different.

“That could still be at Liverpool, depending on what they are thinking. It could be back up in Scotland or in England – I honestly don’t know the answer to that question.

“But I am keen to get something permanent.”

Stephenson was involved in the last two pre-seasons as part of Arne Slot‘s senior squad, but it appears as though his contract situation along with his desire to establish himself as a regular starter will force Liverpool’s hand.

A move is likely to be agreed before the Reds return for sessions at the AXA Training Centre in a month’s time, with Bolton head coach Steven Schumacher looking to bolster his squad for a campaign back in the Championship.
