Donald Trump has responded to ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith after the longtime basketball commentator criticized the president's appearance at a New York Knicks vs San Antonio Spurs NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden.
The exchange started after Smith questioned Trump's decision to attend the high-profile matchup, arguing that it created major disruptions for fans and the city during one of the biggest basketball events of the year.
Trump did not hold back when addressing Smith's remarks.
"I think he's a nice guy, but you need a certain aptitude to run for president. You need a high IQ. I'm not sure that Stephen has that. I don't think he does, actually," he said.
The comments added another chapter to the growing public back-and-forth between the president and one of ESPN's most recognizable personalities.
Stephen A. Smith reportedly wants to try his luck in presidential elections in 2028 according to earlier reports.
Stephen A. Smith criticized Trump's presence at MSG
During an ESPN segment, Smith made it clear that his issue was not political, but rather the logistical challenges created by a presidential visit to one of the most crowded areas in the country during a major playoff game.
"This is strictly a basketball segment," he said on ESPN. "This president has no business showing up in New York City. I am dead serious. It is selfish. It is narcissistic. It is ridiculous that he is coming to this game. I would say the same thing if it were Obama, George W., or Clinton. I don't give a damn if we went back to Reagan. This is not a football stadium in some space in Texas where you got a whole bunch of outlays and all of this. This is the garden. This is Midtown Manhattan. Do you have any idea what the congestion is gonna be like in New York City here?"
Smith's comments quickly gained attention across both sports and political circles, especially as the Knicks continued their playoff run in front of packed crowds at Madison Square Garden.
Tight Security Measures Impacted Fans
Trump arrived at Madison Square Garden roughly one hour before the 8:30 p.m. ET tip-off for Game 3. He was accompanied by his granddaughter and several members of his cabinet.
Because of the presidential visit, authorities implemented extensive security measures around the arena. The Knicks organization also introduced additional restrictions to accommodate security protocols.
No official watch parties were organized for fans, while those attending the game encountered heightened security procedures before entering the building.
Ticket holders and members of the media were required to go through TSA-style screenings. A strict no-bag policy was also enforced, leading to longer wait times around the arena.
The extra precautions became a major talking point before tip-off, with many fans expressing frustration over the delays and restrictions.
