Liverpool are already looking ahead to the new campaign at Academy level, with decisions being made across the age groups as part of the club’s annual retained and released list.
This is always a big moment in the calendar at Kirkby, where young players learn whether their futures will remain on Merseyside or continue elsewhere. For those who receive fresh terms, it represents a major vote of confidence in their development and a signal that Liverpool believe there is more to come.
The club have now officially offered contracts to eight youngsters: Prince Cisse, Keyrol Figueroa, Kyle Kelly, Afolami Onanuga, Oliver O’Connor, Lucas Pitt, Ben Trueman and Matthew Wright.
Keyrol Figueroa a highlight, with the forward having made his senior Honduras debut earlier this month in a 2-0 defeat to Argentina. The 19-year-old came through the youth ranks with the United States before switching allegiance.
Keyrol is also following in distinguished footsteps. His father is former Wigan and Honduras defender Maynor Figueroa, who made more than 100 appearances for his country and spent several years in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Prince Cisse is also one to watch, being the son of former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse.
While he is not a striker like his father, the defender has been at the academy since the age of six and made his u21 debut in March for the club despite only being 18 years of age.
Kyle Kelly also deserves special mention. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder represents St Kitts and Nevis at international level and is considered one of the more highly rated prospects in his age group.
Securing his services, along with the other five youngsters helps to maintain depth and quality across the Academy squads.
The hope now is that at least a few from this group can follow the path trodden by the likes of Curtis Jones from Kirkby all the way to Anfield.
