The Memphis Grizzlies are widely expected to trade two-time NBA All-Star and former 2019-20 Rookie of the Year Ja Morant this offseason. However, the Phoenix Suns, a rumored suitor for the star guard, do not hold interest in pursuing a trade for Morant, multiple league sources close to the matter told ClutchPoints.
Morant to the Suns has been an idea brought up in rumors several times since this past season's trade deadline for obvious reasons. Aside from his connection with Phoenix wing Dillon Brooks dating back to their time playing with one another in Memphis, Morant would, in theory, fit the need for a dynamic guard alongside Devin Booker.
This is a role the team had hoped Jalen Green would thrive in during the 2025-26 season, but he only played in 32 games this past year due to various injuries.
Aside from not wanting to make a drastic roster change this offseason, sources said the Suns do not have interest in taking on the remaining $87 million on Morant's current contract. The Grizzlies and Suns never engaged in discussions centered around Morant at the trade deadline, and the two sides have not discussed a potential deal early on this offseason.
Upon checking in on this rumor connecting Morant to the Suns, one team source told ClutchPoints that pursuing a Morant trade is “not an option” for Phoenix this offseason.
“That's not something we are getting involved with,” the team source further stated.
Suns journalist and insider Gerald Bourguet has also reported that Phoenix does not hold interest in such a trade.
Morant has been on the trade block for months now, as Grizzlies executive Zach Kleiman has already taken his organization in a new direction after trading Desmond Bane last summer and Jaren Jackson Jr. before the February 5th trade deadline.
After constant internal feuds with the Grizzlies, including not seeing eye to eye with head coach Tuomas Iisalo on multiple occasions, it became apparent that Morant's time in Memphis was coming to an end. He missed the team's final 40 games of the 2025-26 season after suffering a sprained ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his left elbow, and Morant did not partake in the team's final exit interviews this season.

The next steps for Morant and the Grizzlies remain a mystery with the 2026 NBA Draft two weeks away, where Memphis will be utilizing the No. 3 overall pick to add a franchise cornerstone. Many around the league anticipate the Grizzlies selecting Cameron Boozer, the 2026 Naismith Men's College Player of the Year from Duke.
At the trade deadline, the Grizzlies engaged in trade conversations with the Milwaukee Bucks, but these talks never progressed. Sources told ClutchPoints that Memphis wanted Ryan Rollins included in any deal for Morant, which the Bucks were unwilling to do.
As a result of Milwaukee recently hiring Taylor Jenkins, many have pointed to the Bucks becoming a top suitor once more for Morant. The sense from discussing this possibility with league personnel is that the Bucks were interested in pairing Morant with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Now that a Giannis trade appears to be on the horizon, a Morant trade also appears unlikely for the Bucks.
One of the main reasons the Grizzlies did not trade Morant at the deadline was due to his perceived negative value around the NBA. Memphis did not feel like they needed to attach any assets to move Morant's contract, nor were they willing to accept only second-round picks for him.
Now, Morant's trade value remains a major mystery ahead of the NBA Draft and July's free agency period. It is unknown at this time whether there is a team not only willing to surrender some sort of asset for Morant but also whether there is a clear fit for him on another team before the 2026-27 season.
