Darwin Nunez could not prove his worth at Al-Hilal
As reported by One Football, Darwin Nunez has mutually terminated his contract with Saudi side, Al-Hilal. Therefore, he is now a free agent. So, he had expressed his desire to play for the Reds again. In July 2025, the 26-year-old had joined the Saudi club from Liverpool for €53m, according to Transfermarkt.
But his tenure in Saudi Arabia was not smooth. He had to face several difficulties. In February he had to face a major blow. He was dropped from the squad to make space for Karim Benzema. The Saudi league side signed the French striker in the January transfer window.
What did Nunez say about his time at Liverpool and club’s fans?
The 26-year-old Uruguayan made a big transfer move to Liverpool from Benfica in July 2022. The Merseyside club bought him for €85m, including add-ons, as per Transfermarkt. The forward scored 40 goals in 143 games for the Reds. In 2024-25 which was their title winning season, Nunez played just 8 games in Premier League as a starter.
He was grateful to the Liverpool fans during his time at Anfield. Last summer, when his departure from the English club was official, he sent a message to thank all the fans. As reported by Mirror, he said, “ Thank you, Liverpool. I’ll take with me countless memories that will live forever.”He said that it was his time to say goodbye after spending three years at Merseyside.
The forward became emotional in the later part of the message. He conveyed that he was leaving with a heart full of love shown by the supporters. Nunez also acknowledged that the fans always had his back in his ups and downs. He assured that Liverpool will always be a part of him. In the end, he thanked all his teammates and the club staff and wished them luck for their future. Darwin Nunez had no issues while he was at Liverpool. But he was accused of missing a lot of chances on the field, as reported by Sky Sports back in December 2022
He spoke highly about his previous club’s fans in an interview earlier in 2026. As reported by Yahoo Sports, he said that he would be lying if he say he is not missing the Liverpool fans. They had welcomed the striker and his family in the club. While he was going through some personal problems, those people helped him with affection and support. This is why he misses the Reds.
