‘We’ve Been Blessed’: Mason McCormick Talks James Campen’s Early Impact, Adjusting To Left Guard

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line has had plenty of moving parts the last few offseasons. This year, it may have more than ever. While some on the unit are getting used to new positions, they’re all trying to get comfortable with their new position coach, James Campen.

“It’s been really good. He’s got different philosophies, as every o-line coach. And it’s been awesome to have, going from Pat Meyer, who’s an awesome coach, to now coach Campen. We’ve been blessed as a unit,” Mason McCormick said Tuesday via Steelers.com.

It’s been a little while since Campen coached at the NFL level. But he has plenty of experience, and it seems like he’s putting it to work so far. McCormick isn’t the only one with some praise for his new coach, with his partner-in-crime Zach Frazier mentioning his excitement to get to work as well.

Everyone on the unit is still getting familiar with Campen. However, there’s plenty of shuffling going on besides that. Like others along the offensive line, McCormick may be moving positions.

“We’ve been getting a lot of reps at left. It’s been really good to work it, and we’ll see how training camp goes,” McCormick said.

Mason McCormick quickly became a mainstay at right guard after the Steelers drafted him in 2024, with Isaac Seumalo on the left side. But with Seumalo departing in free agency, and Pittsburgh focusing on positionally versatile players this offseason, the door is open on switching positions.

As such, McCormick has started getting more reps on the left side. Something that should come to him easier since that’s where he played during his college days. And after playing on the right side with Troy Fautanu to start his career, he’ll likely be alongside Fautanu again on the left in 2026.

Those two aren’t the only offensive linemen potentially moving. If McCormick moves to the left, Spencer Anderson, Brock Hoffman, and Gennings Dunker will compete for the right guard spot. Dylan Cook can also move around, with some pointing at right tackle as his eventual landing spot. Of course, Broderick Jones and Max Iheanachor are in the fold as well.

Point being there’s a lot for this offensive line to adjust to across the board. So far, Mason McCormick is feeling comfortable with his new coach, and a new position as well.
