Cowboys are embracing a QB competition

Dak Prescott remains the Dallas Cowboys' No. 1 QB, and he has plenty on his plate.

Prescott is trying to lead Dallas on a deep playoff run one of these years, and that's his main concern at this point.

Behind Prescott, though, things have the potential to get interesting.

On Tuesday, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer admitted that they're going to a have a true quarterback competition for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

In one corner is Joe Milton. The Cowboys got him in a trade from the New England Patriots before the 2025 season.

Milton got into four games with the Cowboys, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions.

The other competitor is Sam Howell. He signed with the Cowboys in free agency.

Last season, Howell was traded before the campaign and ended up being a backup QB with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now, he makes his third stop in the NFC East. He began his career with the Washington Commanders, and he actually started 18 games there.

Both of these QBs were selected in the late rounds of the draft, but both also came out of college with big traits that drew intrigue.

Now, the battle for Dallas is figuring out which of these players is more likely to succeed if Prescott misses time.

Howell certainly has the starting experience on his side. Milton has one of the biggest arms around.

The reality is that the Cowboys might be in trouble either way if Prescott gets hurt. But they're still better off if they pick the correct QB2, and there's going to be a battle for that spot.
