Tottenham to battle Chelsea for Serie A goalkeeper who ended 2025/26 with 14 clean sheets

Tottenham are keeping close tabs on the situation of an experienced Serie A goalkeeper.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea last summer. The Blues looked at the France international but could not get a deal done, largely because AC Milan’s demands were too high.

A season later, the situation appears to be different. Mike Maignan still continues to be one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but his contract situation and the departure of coach Max Allegri has left his future in limbo. And with the Rossoneri failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League, he is considering his future.

Chelsea appears to have revived their interest in the 30-year-old, and it is easy to understand why they are keen to add him to their ranks. However, the Pensioners are not expected to have a free run at the AC Milan star.

Tottenham to battle Chelsea for Mike Maignan

According to a report from Italian outlet Tutto Juve, Tottenham could battle Chelsea for the signing of Maignan who ended 2025/26 Serie A season with 14 clean sheets. Spurs are closely monitoring the Frenchman’s situation, while Juventus also remain keen.

Tottenham are understood to view the Milan man as the ideal candidate to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks. There are no official offers yet, but the report adds that the interest from the English clubs is concrete. This means both Tottenham and Chelsea are very much serious about signing Maignan this summer, and the reasons are obvious.

Maignan is an established goalkeeper with European pedigree, having won the Scudetto with Milan. He would improve both Tottenham and Chelsea’s squads if he walked in. The undisputed Milan No.1 would be a straight upgrade over Chelsea’s error-prone Robert Sanchez. He’d bring calm and control at the back for the Pensioners.

Similarly, Spurs would do well to replace Guglielmo Vicario with Maignan. Should Vicario depart, which is expected amid Juventus interest, the Frenchman would be a top option to fit into Roberto De Zerbi’s possession-based style of play. Calm and composed in possession, the ex-Lille custodian would massively help the North Londoners in building the play out from the back.

It is possible that Maignan won’t be making any decision on his future until after this summer’s World Cup, with France one of the overwhelming favourites. From Tottenham’s perspective, Maignan could become the transformative signing their defence has been craving for the last two years.
