NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Calls Out NBA Finals Refs

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani took a jab at San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and the NBA's referees after Game 3 was over.

Wembanyama powered the Spurs to a crucial win over the New York Knicks on Monday, scoring 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field. While there's no question he was great, he got away with a potential flagrant foul during the first half of action. The 22-year-old superstar was caught shoving Jalen Brunson in the head.

Mamdani was clearly not thrilled that Wembanyama got away with a flagrant foul.

"Couldn't agree more. We'll win this series on the court (even if the refs refuse to call a flagrant on Wemby), not by targeting, harassing, or attacking Spurs fans," the mayor of New York City wrote on social media. "Knicks in 5."

It's worth noting that Monty McCutchen, the NBA's head of officiating, said the refs missed a foul on Wembanyama. However, there's no guarantee he'll be assessed a flagrant foul retroactively.

The Knicks are taking a stand against Wembanyama.

Knicks guard Jose Alvarado was asked by reporters Tuesday about Wembanyama's questionable play against Brunson.

"I think that's not basketball," Alvarado said, view Zach Braziller of the New York Post. "That's something that they gotta look at. But he got away with one. That'll be the last one."

Suffice to say, the Knicks are done taking the high road against Wembanyama and the Spurs.

Game 4 of the NBA Finals will take place Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
