Dave Portnoy Calls Out Spike Lee’s ‘Obnoxious’ Courtside Freakout at MSG Finals

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy didn’t hold back after watching longtime Knicks superfan Spike Lee lose his cool during Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

Spike Lee’s Obnoxious Courtside Meltdown Goes Viral

For those who didn’t watch the game, Lee stood up courtside and began heckling the referees following a no-call on Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who appeared to shove Knicks guard Jalen Brunson to the floor off the ball.

Lee wasn’t just yelling. He was obnoxiously stomping his feet and throwing his hands all over the Garden.

“Are we just allowing Spike Lee on the court to heckle refs in the middle of the game?” Portnoy said. “Then he (Spike) calls a foul, so we are just letting opposing fans call the game.”

Portnoy added sarcastically, “With how much those tickets were, why not walk on the court?”

So Spike Lee is allowed to throw temper tantrums at mid court, harass the refs and make a foul call? Good to know. pic.twitter.com/1YWsVBODnJ

Spike Lee’s Long History of Courtside Drama

Lee was his usual ridiculous presence. Perhaps he feels entitled to the behavior. After all, he is a part of the elitist crowd that filled up MSG on Monday.

The average ticket price for Game 3, according to Vivid Seats, was $7,683. Courtside seats were in the $200k range, with some going for as high as $330k.

Lee, wearing one of his signature custom Knicks jerseys—this time a Pope Leo XIV-themed one—jumped to his feet while most of celebrity row stayed seated. He gestured angrily toward the officials as the play continued. And here’s the funny part — he accused President Trump of being a distraction during the game.

You’d think he’d learn his lesson.

For Lee, this kind of passion is nothing new. He’s been a die-hard Knicks season-ticket holder since the Patrick Ewing era and has been a visible presence at MSG for decades. Lee has reportedly spent over $10 million on Knicks tickets over the past 30 seasons and has zero NBA championships to show for it.

But he’s also been overly involved in some playoff games. Involvement that some could argue actually cost the Knicks.

His most famous moment as a Knicks fan? Running his mouth to the Indiana Pacers’ Reggie Miller when the Knicks entered the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead, then earning a choke sign when the Knicks lost as Miller hit an NBA record five 3-pointers in the final frame.

“Reggie Miller scored 25 points in the fourth quarter, all while throwing shade at Spike Lee, after every made field goal (and free throw),” writes Fadeaway World.

Lee was also courtside for Miller’s famous ‘8 points in 9 seconds’ playoff game.
