Despite Only Playing Outside This Spring, Daylen Everette Learning Slot Corner

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Daylen Everette totaled only 92 reps in the slot over his last two seasons at Georgia. So it’s no surprise he has only played outside cornerback since the Steelers drafted him in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. But Everette told reporters today that he’s still trying to learn to work inside in case he’s ever needed there.

“For the most part, I’ve just been outside, but I’m just trying to learn every position just ’cause you never know what happens,” Everette said after Pittsburgh’s eighth OTA session on Tuesday via Post-Gazette Sports on YouTube.

Injuries could test the Steelers’ depth inside and outside, particularly inside. Brandin Echols took over the starting slot job last season and played well, and Jalen Ramsey is also capable of playing in the slot. That would require moving him down from safety, something the Steelers will occasionally do but likely would prefer not to do full-time. D’Shawn Jamison is also an option in the slot, but he faces an uphill battle to make the roster.

Meanwhile, on the outside, the Steelers have Everette and Asante Samuel Jr. behind Jamel Dean and Joey Porter Jr., though options beyond them are a little thin. Still, there’s an outside chance that the Steelers could use Everette in the slot if needed. He’s reportedly been a standout during OTAs, and that could get him on the field sooner.

However, given that the majority of his experience has come on the outside, the Steelers might prefer to keep him there rather than throwing him into the fire at a new position. While it’s good that Everette is staying prepared and is putting himself in a position to be ready if needed, it could stunt his development and move him too early in his career.

Training camp will provide a better idea of how the Steelers view Everette. But given he has only worked outside so far, the team likely won’t deviate from that much. If Everette keeps excelling, he could push for more playing time on the outside, and there would be no need to stick him in an unfamiliar position. But if the Steelers call on him, it’s good to know that Everette is doing whatever is necessary to stay ready.
