Liverpool legend John Aldridge did little to hide his frustration with a FIFA official during an infamous touchline outburst at the 1994 World Cup.
During the last World Cup hosted by the United States, Aldridge — who recently disagreed with Jamie Carragher on Liverpool’s transfer priority this summer — started the Republic of Ireland’s match against Mexico on the bench.
With Ireland trailing 1-0 in the second half at Camping World Stadium — formerly known as the Citrus Bowl — in Orlando, manager Jack Charlton prepared to make a double substitution putting Aldridge and Jason McAteer into the game. “We were warming up, just ready to go on,” the Reds icon told BBC’s Tricia Penrose in June 2024.
“And [Luis] Garcia makes it 2-0 then. I was desperate to get on the pitch. This is the World Cup.”
As Aldridge attempted to make his way onto the pitch, however, he was abruptly stopped by a linesman. “The two lads have come off, and Jason had gone on,” Aldridge recalled.
“I'm ready to go on. I'm really, really wound up. And I want to score. I want to score two goals. And then I go to go on. And then this arm comes across me by the linesman and says, ‘No, you go nowhere.’
“So I said, ‘What?’ Next minute, the referee starts the game up. The ball didn't go out to play for quite a long time. It stayed in play without going out.”

After pacing up and down the touchline for what felt like an eternity, Aldridge could no longer keep his emotions in check. “I couldn't get on. I was frustrated. And it boiled over,” he said. “It boiled over inside of me, and I am quite feisty.
“And Jack comes, and then the fourth official comes with the blue coat and the yellow hat on, whatever he had. And he made things worse. He was very aggressive, you know, pulling people.
“When he didn't let me on the pitch, I can't tell you how frustrated I was. Beyond means. The fact that we only had 10 men on the pitch in the heat, the humidity, 2-0 down. And I want to be on the pitch with the lads, helping them to get the two goals back. I lost it, completely and utterly lost it.”
Aldridge promptly descended into a fit of rage while hurling obscenities at officials. Unbeknownst to him, a nearby cameraman captured the entire meltdown.

“I didn't even have a clue that there were cameras on us anyway,” he said. “I expected the cameras to be watching the game, not watching us on the sideline, which … emphasized it even more.
“I was losing minutes at the World Cup as well. It's a World Cup going global, worldwide, to billions of people. I want to get on the pitch. I want to score a goal for us.”

Upon finally being substituted into the match, Aldridge wasted little time before netting Ireland’s first goal of the contest. “No-one ever talks about the goal. People always talk about the sideline incident,” he said with a hearty laugh.
Once the dust had finally settled on Ireland's 2-1 loss, Aldridge was fined nearly £1,500 for his fiery tantrum. “If I met the match official today, I'd just ask him what it was all about," he concluded. "Because we couldn't understand why ... he didn't put me on the pitch. It would have been nice for me and Jack to get it all out.”
