As the Detroit Pistons seek out ways to improve their roster this summer, one of their biggest changes needs to be internal. Cade Cunningham needs Jalen Duren to learn from Karl-Anthony Towns, who has been one of the New York Knicks’ top offensive options in the playoffs (until a recent cold spell in the Finals). Cunningham needs Duren to take a serious jump on the offensive end of the court.
Towns is a good offensive player. It’s why the Knicks traded for him. To help take some of the pressure off Jalen Brunson. And instead of trading Duren for an upgrade on offense, Cunningham and the Pistons need Duren to take a leap on offense. They need him to improve his offensive game.
That’s how the Pistons’ center position will significantly improve.
Jalen Duren needs to be better on offense like KAT
When the Knicks need scoring, they can look to Towns. When Brunson doesn’t have it on any given night, he can depend on Towns. He can be a top guy on the offensive end.
Towns is a legitimate threat from behind the three-point line. He can post up and capitalize on offensive rebounds in the paint. He can thrive in the pick-and-roll or pick-and-pop. And when he needs to, he can be aggressive and get buckets on his own.
He’s a huge answer to a lot of the offensive problems the Knicks were facing before they traded for him. He’s a huge reason why New York is in the NBA Finals right now.
That’s what the Pistons need from Duren, as his lack of an offensive game was a massive problem in the playoffs this year, and one of the main reasons Detroit flamed out in the second round against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Pistons have a great roster. Cunningham is very clearly a top talent in the NBA, capable of leading a team deep into the playoffs. He just needs more help on the offensive end.
Duren, in particular, needs to take a leap on that side of the ball. He was an All-Star in the regular season but then struggled to impose his will once the postseason came around.
The Pistons big man needs to take a page out of Towns’ book. He needs to be more aggressive on offense. He needs to find pockets of the game to get his offensive game going.
He needs to develop a better, more consistent offensive game in order to help take some of the offensive pressure off Cunningham, just like Towns does for Brunson.
