Real Madrid is expected to unveil Ibrahima Konate as a new signing imminently after the Frenchman departed Liverpool at the end of his contract this summer.
Konate had stated emphatically that he would be staying at Anfield, only for things to drag on with no conclusion. It was then confirmed that he and Liverpool had failed to come to an agreement, and he would therefore be moving on.
Things have been complicated by the presidential elections at Real Madrid, but Konate will sign for the Bernabeu side. Jose Mourinho will be installed at the club's next manager, with Alvaro Arbeloa's departure confirmed on Tuesday.
According to El Desmarque, Konate will sign until 2030 on a salary of around $28 million (£21 million) per season. That works out at around $533K (£400K) per week before tax.
Additionally, Real Madrid will supposedly pay the player a signing bonus of around $23 million (£17 million) to secure his signature, which is a reminder that no transfer is ever really 'free'.
Liverpool has already brought in Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a deal worth around $83 million (£60 million). It also has the young talent Giovanni Leoni coming back from injury.
But Virgil van Dijk only has one year left on his contract and there has been links with an exit for Joe Gomez, who has drawn interest from elsewhere in each of the last two summers.

In addition to adding more quality in wide areas, with Yan Diomande one player who is admired, signing another center-back to ensure it has enough depth might be a good idea.
"Dear Liverpool. Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams," Konate wrote on Instagram when his departure was confirmed.
"Today, I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Representing this club has been an honor. We've shared incredible moments together... highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever, none more painful than losing our brother Diogo [Jota].
"Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods of my life, but even through hardship, my commitment to this club never changed. During the toughest moments, I gave everything I had for this badge.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
"To my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for helping me grow every single day. And to the supporters... thank you for your love, your energy and your incredible support. Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted.
"I am deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. This isn't an easy goodbye, but it's time for a new challenge and a new chapter. See you again soon, inshallah. YNWA."
Liverpool.com says: Losing Konate is a blow and it leaves the Reds even more light of experience. Signing a player to replace him should be a priority to avoid any crisis at the back next term.
