Lionel Messi came up against former Barcelona team-mate Eidur Gudjohnsen’s son during an international friendly on Tuesday.
Argentina enjoyed a 3-0 win over Iceland in their final World Cup 2026 warm-up game in a match which saw Messi play against a certain Daníel Tristan Gudjohnsen.
“Hi, you played with my dad’ - is how Gudjohnsen reportedly introduced himself. The two had met before, when Gudjohnsen was just a baby, and Messi revealed he had been taken by surprise.
Messi told reporters: “He said to me, ‘Do you remember who I am?’ I was surprised at the time. I honestly didn’t remember he was very young.”
The two players then enjoyed a chat, a hug and a handshake in a nice moment at the end of the match in Auburn, Alabama.
Gudjohnsen Jr came through the Barcelona academy before going on to play in Sweden for Malmo. His dad, Eidur, spent three seasons at Barcelona with Messi between 2006 and 2009, making 114 official appearances and scored 19 goals for the Catalans.
The game came as Argentina finalise preparations to defend their World Cup crown. The defending champions kick off against Algeria.
