On Monday night, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and United States President Donald Trump both attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals in Madison Square Garden, but Mamdani far outclassed Trump in the way he approached the game.
Trump used a massive amount of public money to sit in a private luxury box and dismissed concerns about attending the game despite soaring ticket prices by telling average New Yorkers “that’s the way life goes.” Mamdani, meanwhile, used his own money to buy a standing room only ticket and advocated for affordable tickets for everyday fans.
Trump Attends NBA Finals
Trump decided to attend Monday night’s game after receiving an invitation from New York Knicks team owner James Dolan, but it came with a hefty price tag for the American taxpayers.
While it’s not clear exactly how much taxpayer money was spent on Trump’s appearance at Game 3 on Monday night, Trump’s appearance at a UFC event in Madison Square Garden back in 2019 cost taxpayers more than $250,000. However, that didn’t involve securing 10 blocks of the city the way authorities did on Monday night. Given the sheer amount of resources required to secure 10 blocks in the heart of New York City for the biggest sporting event the city has seen in decades, the bill was surely considerably larger this time around.
But it wasn’t just the use of taxpayer money that raised eyebrows. Trump also received criticism for his decision to attend a game where the average ticket price was more than $8,000, pricing out the typical New Yorker. He received even more criticism for his response to that criticism.
“You can watch it on television,” Trump said. “It’s sort of semi-free to watch it on television.”
“That’s the way life goes,” Trump added. “Now, if the team wasn’t a big success, you could go very easily. That’s just the way life is.”
Trump did indeed attend the game, sitting in a luxury box throughout the contest where he appeared to fall asleep. However, he did not receive a warm reception from the crowd.
Mamdani Was Very Different
While Mamdani attended the same game as Trump and they were rooting for the same team, that’s about where the similarities stop.
Unlike Trump, Mamdani was outspoken in pushing back against the soaring high ticket prices, as he declared that “sports should not become a luxury commodity” and promised to look into the possibility of offering free or discounted tickets to average fans.
“We’re going to look at everything we can do,” Mamdani said. “I don’t want to make a promise that I can’t keep, but this is something that I am very passionate about.”
Mamdani went on to celebrate that Dolan and Madison Square Garden gave away at least 500 free finals tickets to underprivileged families for Games 3 and 4, and could give more for Game 6 if it happens.
“I’m appreciative of the fact that Mr. Dolan has provided a number of hundreds of tickets for these finals for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it,” Mamdani said, via The Athletic. “I think this is a moment where everyone is thinking about the Knicks … (While campaigning), I remember speaking about the fact that we’re going to fight for affordable tickets and there are many who rolled their eyes. And now there will be a thousand New Yorkers who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to go to the game for whom this will mean everything and that’s an incredible opportunity.”
As for the game itself, Mamdani said before the game that he would be sitting “in a very different section of the stadium” than Trump. That turned out to be the truth, though Mamdani did not actually have a seat at all. Mamdani revealed on Monday that he had purchased his own standing room only ticket for the game while Trump watched from a luxury box.
But despite their differences, Mamdani had a classy response to Trump’s appearance at the game, making it clear that he was welcome just like any longtime New Yorker and Knicks fan.
‘They Are Not The Same’
Needless to say, the comparison between Mamdani and Trump led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“They are not the same,” someone wrote in a post on X.
“Make Mamdani the next POTUS,” another person commented.
“Mamdani? Pays $1K of his own money for a SRO ticket at MSG tonight. Trump? Uses millions of YOUR money to inconvenience half of NYC, just so he can take naps in a luxury box,” someone else added.
“And was up in the nosebleed section. Mad respect for him. I’m not a New Yorker,” another user wrote of Mamdani.
“Real power vs less,” someone else wrote.
It’s not clear whether or not Mamdani will attend Game 4 on Wednesday night, but Trump has already decided against it.
