Sunderland confirm talks with Leeds United-linked defender after loan spell
Sunderland have confirmed they are in talks with Leeds United-linked defender Lutsharel Geertruida.
The 25-year-old, who is contracted to German outfit RB Leipzig, has just completed a season on loan at the Stadium of Light.
He amassed 30 appearances for the Black Cats, helping the club book a place in the Europa League in their first season back in the top flight.
Reports indicated Sunderland were not planning to activate their option to buy Geertruida upon the expiry of his loan agreement.

Leeds were credited with interest in the versatile operator, as were Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. However, it appears a stay at Sunderland could be on the cards for Geertruida.
In their retained list statement, Sunderland have confirmed they are in discussions with the right-back.
A club spokesperson said: “The club can confirm it remains in discussions with Lutsharel Geertruida.”
It remains to be seen whether there is an agreement struck with Sunderland, who may be looking to renegotiate the terms of his deal. If the likes of Leeds are indeed eyeing him, they will be keeping a close eye on developments.
Talks are being held against the backdrop of the World Cup, which Geertruida could feature in having been called up as a replacement for the injured Jurrien Timber in the Netherlands squad.

When Sunderland secured his signature last summer, the club’s then-sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “We are delighted that Lutsharel has joined us for the 2025/26 season.
“He was extremely motivated by our proposal from the very beginning, and the opportunity to bring such a high-calibre player to the club on loan was a perfect fit for us. Competition for his signature was high, but the combination of our club, city, and fanbase ultimately made the difference.”
