Ex-Luton and Arsenal keeper signs for Town's League One rivals Wycombe

Macey heads to the Chairboys

The 31-year-old had two spells at Kenilworth Road, joining on loan from the Emirates Stadium in January 2017 when Town were in League Two, playing 13 times for the club. Macey, who also had stints at Accrington Stanley and Plymouth Argyle, left the Gunners having played twice for the north London giants during his eight years at the club after being plucked from Bristol Rovers’ academy, went to Hibernian in July 2018, reaching the Scottish Cup final in 2021.

He then returned to Kenilworth Road in June 2022, but only made one appearance in the Carabao Cup, loaned to Portsmouth in January 2023. Macey then moved to Fratton Park on a permanent deal 12 months later, before signing for Colchester United in March 2024, featuring 98 times for the club, also keeping 11 clean sheets and conceding just 48 goals in 45 outings last term, although left in the summer when his contract ended.

Speaking to the Chairboys’ official website about his move, Macey said: “I’m really pleased, really excited to be here and just can't wait to get back to pre-season and meet everybody. It’s a really ambitious club, it’s a really exciting time to be involved at a club like this and I was just keen to be a part of it.

"It’s been quite a varied career to date, I’ve played a lot of roles within the goalkeeping department and been at different clubs at different levels, lived and played in all parts of the country and it’s all helped me to be the player and the person I am today. I’ve played in League One with Portsmouth, so I know the level and I had a really enjoyable and loved my time at Colchester for a couple of years.

"Ultimately I always had my eye on coming back to this level, and I’m looking forward to taking that challenge on now. I think I play quite calm, I like to give some confidence to the people around me, and with my height and my size, I try to dominate the six yard box and try to take some crosses.”

Meanwhile, Tom Stockwell, Wycombe’s director of football strategy and data intelligence, added: “Matt is a very experienced keeper who has performed to a high level in the EFL for a number of years, with the last two seasons at Colchester. Along with the addition of Conor Hazard earlier in the window, Matt’s arrival really strengthens the goalkeeping department at the club. Matt’s shot-stopping and aerial dominance numbers were very strong in League Two last season and we're delighted to have Matt at the club."
