Liverpool takes the title from Arsenal as Stansted Airport scores football shirt sales

Newly-crowned Premier League champions Arsenal may have lifted the trophy this season, but they were pipped by Liverpool when it comes to shirt sales at Stansted Airport.

New figures show the Reds surged from seventh place last year to take top spot among passengers in 2025/26, overtaking the Gunners, who slipped from number one into second despite their players’ success on the pitch.

The data, compiled from shirt sales at the JD Sports store in the terminal between August 2025 and May 2026, highlights the shifting popularity of clubs among Stansted travellers.

West Ham United was again among the standout performers, finishing third and ahead of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in fourth. Manchester United completed the top five.

Last year’s rankings were also boosted by strong demand for international kits, with England and England retro shirts both featuring in the top 10, but neither made the list this season.

Newcastle United, Manchester City and Chelsea also feature in this year’s top 10, alongside Aston Villa and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Overall, shirt sales rose by 19% compared with the previous year, underlining strong demand from the millions of passengers travelling through London Stansted.

Stephen Martin, Stansted’s retail director, said: “It’s always interesting to see which teams prove most popular with our passengers, and this year’s figures show just how strong the global appeal of clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal remains.

“Liverpool taking top spot ahead of the newly crowned champions will no doubt spark a bit of debate, while West Ham finishing above Spurs is another talking point that fans will enjoy. “With millions of passengers passing through London Stansted each year, our shops offer a fascinating snapshot of the teams people are supporting from across the UK and around the world. With our other local team, Ipswich Town, back in the Premier League, it’ll be interesting to see if they can break into the top 10 next season.”
