One-time Wednesday target released by Chelsea - fits rebuild profile

Sheffield Wednesday are approaching a manic summer of business.

A recent Sheffield Wednesday transfer consideration is newly available after his release by a Premier League club. Sam Rak-Sakyi emerged as one player Wednesday would have liked to have brought on board towards the end of the summer window of last year before the club’s recruitment restriction realities kicked in.

The Chelsea youngster, who plays as a defensive midfielder and is capped at youth level for England, was the subject of discussions around a loan deal but as in the case of Jaden Heskey, a lack of financial assurances from the top of the club to the EFL didn’t allow for the deal to complete. Heskey later joined in the January window.

Rak-Sakyi, who has been linked with a host of Championship clubs in the past including Coventry City, is the brother of former Sheffield United attacker and also one-time Wednesday target Jesarun Rak-Sakyi. He made four senior appearances for the Blues having joined their Cobham academy as an eight-year-old.

Whether or not Wednesday reignite their admiration for the 21-year-old remains to be seen. The Owls have a major rebuild job to undertake, with the squad having been decimated by its financial position in the last couple of windows. The intention appears to be to build a changing room blended in youth and experience, with transfer market upscale believed to be a central part to the new ownership’s medium and longer-term vision for club sustainability.
