Potential Knicks trade package for LeBron James revealed

A hypothetical sign-and-trade scenario would send LeBron James to the New York Knicks in exchange for Mikal Bridges if New York falls short in the NBA Finals.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James entering free agency is expected to be one of the biggest storylines of the 2026 NBA offseason once the Finals conclude.

American sports television personality and podcaster Nick Wright recently suggested that James could become a target for the New York Knicks if the Knicks fall short in the NBA Finals. New York currently holds a 2-1 series lead over the San Antonio Spurs.

Wright even proposed a hypothetical sign-and-trade framework that would send LeBron to New York in exchange for Mikal Bridges.

Knicks receive:

LeBron James

Lakers receive:

Mikal Bridges

"I do think a LeBron-Mikal Bridges sign-and-trade could make a lot of sense for a lot of people," Wright said.

Despite the speculation, reports indicate that James still prefers to remain in Los Angeles and continue his career with the Lakers.

Warriors remain interested

While staying with the Lakers is considered the most likely outcome, the Golden State Warriors are reportedly determined to pursue James.

According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, Golden State remains seriously interested in adding the four-time MVP to a veteran core that already features Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green under head coach Steve Kerr.

"Staying with the Lakers is widely believed to be his preferred choice because he is so entrenched in Los Angeles now after eight seasons with the purple and gold," they reported. "Yet league sources maintain that Golden State remains legitimately interested in adding LeBron to their Stephen Curry/Jimmy Butler/Draymond Green core, coached by Steve Kerr.

LeBron is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his $52.6 million contract and has already indicated that he will take his time before deciding on the next step in his career.

Although the Lakers want to retain him, the franchise is also expected to focus on re-signing Austin Reaves and continuing to build around Luka Doncic, including finding a reliable 3-and-D wing and possibly a new starting center.

Reports say that James is unwilling to accept a pay cut, though.

For now, the Warriors appear prepared to make a strong push for the future Hall of Famer. The opportunity to compete alongside Curry in pursuit of another championship would undoubtedly be one of the organization's strongest selling points.

Even at 41 years old, James remains highly productive. During his 23rd NBA season, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists while shooting 51.5% from the field in 60 appearances.
