Coventry City Council has arranged an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) where councillors will be asked to bestow upon the Sky Blues the Freedom of the City.
It represents the highest accolade a local authority can grant and comes in recognition of the club's promotion to the Premier League and its exceptional contribution to city life.
The motion follows a remarkable 2025/26 campaign in which the Sky Blues claimed the EFL Championship title and confirmed their return to England's top division for the first time in 25 years.
Should councillors approve the measure at the EGM on Tuesday 23 June 2026, the honour would be bestowed upon the club as a whole, acknowledging the players, management, staff, owner and the supporters and communities who have backed the team.
Under boss Frank Lampard, Coventry City clinched promotion on 17 April 2026 with three fixtures remaining, before subsequently lifting the Championship trophy as champions.
It signals the club's Premier League comeback for the first time since 2001 and represents an extraordinary turnaround for the team.
The accomplishment was marked across the entire city on Bank Holiday Monday 4 May, when an open-top bus procession travelled through Coventry's neighbourhoods – witnessed by an estimated 200,000 people lining the route – ending at the "We Are Back: Live" festival in War Memorial Park, which drew nearly 50,000 supporters.
The festivities were organised by the club working alongside Coventry City Council. The Freedom of the City stands as the most distinguished civic accolade a council can bestow. It is granted under section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 to individuals – or, in exceptional circumstances, organisations – of notable distinction, or those who have provided outstanding services to the city.
Under legislation, the honour can only be awarded at a specially convened full Council meeting, where no fewer than two-thirds of voting councillors are in agreement – which is why an EGM is being called.
The accolade was most recently presented in Coventry in 2022, when the city bestowed the Freedom of the City upon staff at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, in recognition of their dedication throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond the footballing accomplishment itself, Premier League status represents a considerable opportunity for Coventry. The broader benefits to the city and surrounding region are anticipated to be felt across hospitality, retail, tourism and the visitor economy, with top-flight fixtures putting Coventry in the global spotlight each week.
Councillor George Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council, put forward the football club's nomination for the prestigious accolade.
He said: "Coventry is immensely proud of our football club, and the Sky Blues' return to the Premier League is a moment of huge significance for our city.
"This is an extraordinary achievement which deserves an extraordinary honour. That is why I am asking councillors to come together to award Coventry City Football Club the Freedom of the City – the highest honour this council can bestow.
"This achievement belongs not only to the team and everyone at the club, but to the generations of supporters and communities who have always stood behind them."
Councillor Duggins continued: "Awarding the Freedom of the City is our way, on behalf of the whole city, of saying thank you and recognising everything the club has given to Coventry."
Should the Council give its approval, the honour would be officially presented to the football club at a future date.
