Valentin Barco is set to become Chelsea’s first signing of the Xabi Alonso era. The 21-year-old Argentine has agreed a deal to join the Blues from the BlueCo’s sister club Strasbourg, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the move in the latest Chelsea transfer news.

Barco came through the youth ranks of Boca Juniors before joining Brighton & Hove Albion. He failed to nail down a first team spot at Brighton, but a loan move to Strasbourg and later a permanent transfer for £7.9 million in 2025 completely revived his career.

Under former Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, Barco was converted from a left back into a central midfielder. The result was a breakout season. He became one of the most creative players in Ligue 1, showcasing the dribbling ability and vision that had previously gone unnoticed. This transformation is exactly what has convinced Chelsea to act.

Chelsea’s move for Barco was far from straightforward behind the scenes. Despite the BlueCo advantage, the Blues faced serious competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid were both closely monitoring Barco, with other unnamed European clubs also keeping tabs on the 21 year old throughout the second half of the season.

Romano Confirms: ‘Here We Go’ for the Chelsea Signing

The deal gathered speed after Barco posted a farewell message on Instagram, making it clear he was departing Strasbourg. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano then confirmed the move on X: “stating Chelsea had agreed terms with Barco and that Strasbourg would allow the Argentine midfielder to leave from June”

BBC Sport added that Barco is heading to Stamford Bridge on a long term deal. Negotiations were straightforward due to Chelsea and Strasbourg’s shared BlueCo ownership.

Why Alonso Wants Valentin Barco at Chelsea?

Xabi Alonso fully supports the signing of Barco. The new Chelsea manager likes the Argentine’s technical quality and versatility. Barco can play in several positions central midfielder, left back, or left wing-back. In a back three system, he could be very dangerous as an attacking wing back.

This transfer also sends a clear tactical message. Alonso’s style is based on keeping possession, high pressing, and fast movement. Barco fits that style perfectly. At just 21 years old, he has the potential to become a key player at Stamford Bridge for many years.

For Barco, this is the big opportunity he has worked for throughout his career. He had a frustrating time at Brighton with little success. His loan at Sevilla was difficult he only made nine appearances and scored no goals or assists. But after two strong years at Strasbourg, the Argentine is now ready to prove himself in the Premier League.

Author’s Opinion

Valentin Barco’s move to Chelsea is a smart and well timed piece of business. His growth at Strasbourg proves he has the quality to compete at the highest level. With Xabi Alonso’s guidance, the Argentine midfielder could become one of the most exciting players in the Premier League.
