The prospect of Darwin Nunez returning to Liverpool is one that has been gaining traction among fans on social media in recent days, with the striker almost certainly on the move this summer.

Nunez left Anfield last summer after three years with the Reds, but his career has not kicked on since then - quite the opposite, in fact.

Having joined Al-Hilal, the Uruguayan made a decent enough start in Saudi Arabia before finding himself well and truly out of favor. Nunez was dropped completely from the club’s squad for the second half of the season, and he hasn’t played a domestic game since February.

He looks set to leave Al-Hilal this summer, with suggestions that his contract will be terminated, making him available for free - and that has piqued the interest of some Liverpool fans.

Supporters have been calling for the Reds to re-sign Nunez, with recent rumors claiming that Liverpool is eyeing up its former striker, while the player himself is keen on a return to Merseyside.

Although it’s a move that could gain support from some fans, others will need to take a lot more convincing. Nunez failed to live up to expectations at Liverpool following his big-money move from Benfica, and the decision to sell him last year did seem to be the best option for both parties.

He does have one major supporter from his time at Anfield though - Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian, who is also on the lookout for a new club this summer after bringing his nine-year spell with the Reds to an end, regularly defended Nunez amid criticism of the striker’s performances, and even paid him the highest compliment.

"Who do I most like to play with? It was [Roberto] Firmino. Now I feel like I generally like playing with Nunez,” Salah said in a Q&A in 2024.

He added: “I like playing with him in general. [Nunez is] a player with different skills. Not a lot of people understand his ball."

Salah also jumped to Nunez’s defense upon the striker’s exit from the club last year. When one prominent Liverpool account urged fans to “name a bigger upgrade in footballing history”, while posting pictures of Nunez and Luis Diaz alongside those of new signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, the winger made his feelings clear.

“How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL champions?” Salah posted in response.

Despite Salah’s support for Nunez, and a move back to Anfield getting plenty of backing from fans online, there is no suggestion that Liverpool is planning on making an approach for the striker.

Nunez’s immediate focus will be on this summer’s World Cup. Uruguay kicks off its tournament against Saudi Arabia on Monday, before closing out the group stage with games against Cape Verde (June 21) and Spain (June 27).
