Insider expects 6’5” powerhouse liked by Amorim to sign first Man Utd contract

Manchester United youngster Godwill Kukonki has reportedly done enough to warrant his first professional contract.

The 18-year-old is a physically imposing defender who is widely considered among the most exciting up-and-comers at Carrington alongside the likes of JJ Gabriel and Jim Thwaites.

Standing at 6’5” and blessed with blistering speed and impressive technique, the Stoke-on-Trent native has all the makings of a modern defender, and the club officials are apparently convinced of his immense potential.

Man Utd will offer Godwill Kukonki a new contract

After another solid campaign split between Man Utd’s U18 and U21 sides, Kukonki is seemingly ready to make the next step in his career. But first, the Red Devils must secure his services by tying him down to a new contract.

According to Carrington insider Sully, United are preparing a new contract for the English-Congolese defender.

“Academy info: Highly talented defender Godwill Kukonki is entering his third year scholarship agreement and MUFC**aim to sort out a professional deal in due course,” posted the journalist on his alternative X (formerly Twitter) account.

Sully also provided an interesting update on exciting German-Nigerian teenager Noah Ajayi. The 17-year-old, who partnered with JJ Gabriel in attack for Darren Fletcher’s U18 side, could also be added to the first team’s pre-season camp after catching the eye of Michael Carrick.

Could Kukunki earn a promotion to Man United first team next season?

When Ruben Amorim first arrived at Carrington in November 2024, he was quick to identify the then 16-year-old Kukonki as one Man Utd youngster who was already able to make the step-up to the senior squad.

“He’s 16, but he impressed me a lot, so it’s also a sign to the youth players that they can be here,”said the Portuguese manager.

“If something happened with the first-team, they have to step up and I think he’s ready, he’s very adult to handle the Premier League’s demands.”

Nevertheless, the teenager never made his senior debut under Amorim, who was sacked last January. While his time could come with Carrick, he will likely have to wait for at least another year.

Man Utd already have five centre-backs in the senior team, including Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, two young defenders pushing for additional playing time.

Kukonki can comfortably play as a left-back, a position that United certainly plan to address this summer. However, the management is looking for a more accomplished profile, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as the ideal profile to act as Luke Shaw’s understudy.

Therefore, the English-Congolese youngster would be better off earning experience elsewhere, perhaps through a loan spell at a Championship club.
