Arsenal transfer news: Real Madrid test the waters for Calafiori
Arsenal transfer news: Real Madrid have made contact with Arsenal over a potential swoop for Italy international Riccardo Calafiori. According to Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, the Spanish giants reached out to the Gunners to check on the defender’s availability. Don’t expect presentation photos just yet, though. This was merely an exploratory phone call. No formal negotiations have kicked off.
The timing makes perfect sense. Jose Mourinho arrived back in the Spanish capital on Tuesday ahead of his official unveiling for a second stint as Madrid boss. Journalist Ramón Álvarez de Mon reports that Mourinho personally requested the club look into Calafiori. The Special One loves the 24-year-old’s ability to slot in at both centre-back and left-back. Madrid have already snapped up Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate on free transfers, but Mourinho wants one more defensive body. Calafiori fits the bill perfectly.
The catch? He is under contract at the Emirates until 2029. Arsenal paid Bologna around €45m plus add-ons for him back in 2024, so he won’t come cheap. Madrid usually prefer freebies these days. Injuries are a worry, with the Italian missing 236 days since moving to London. Even so, Mikel Arteta views his ball-carrying skills as vital. Di Marzio suggests talks have already stalled. Arsenal simply aren’t selling.
Anfield, the Emirates, Madrid—The Verdict
Let’s be realistic here. Real Madrid picked up the phone. That is literally it. One casual enquiry does not suddenly pry a crucial asset away from North London, especially when he’s locked down for another three years.
Fabrizio Romano has already cooled the talk, calling any potential deal “not an easy one at all” because Arteta considers the Italian central to his long-term project. Managers don’t just bin off players they rate because Madrid show a bit of interest.
Yes, Mourinho worked with Calafiori at Roma. It’s a nice storyline. Sentiment does not buy footballers, however. Cold, hard cash does. Madrid would have to shatter his original price tag to even get Arsenal to pull up a chair.
Besides, Romano noted that Manchester City’s Joško Gvardiol is also on Madrid’s radar. Mourinho wants that specific profile, a versatile, left-sided defender. If another target proves easier to extract, Los Blancos will pivot.

Arsenal hold all the cards anyway. With Piero Hincapie settled in and young Myles Lewis-Skelly stepping up, squad depth isn’t an issue. But Calafiori offers something unique. Elite left-footed defenders who step out from the back with confidence are incredibly rare. Expect the Gunners to completely shut this down. Madrid will have to look elsewhere.
