The former Manchester United defender and England international was forced to retire at the age of 32 due to injury and almost immediately moved into coaching, working with academy teams at Old Trafford.

Then in February this year he went back to the club where he began his career, when Michael O’Neill brought him in as part of his cloaching staff at Blackburn.

Alan Knill is set to leave his role as Sheffield United's assistant manager.

O’Neill decided against staying on at Ewood Park, having kept Rovers up in his interim role in which he maintained his position as Northern Ireland boss and last week Tony Mowbray returned to the club for a second spell in charge.

Jones is now not staying on at Blackburn and on Wednesday night posted a ‘thank you’ on his social media, the timing of which is sure to ramp up speculation that he is to soon join Sheffield United.
