Nets star a potential trade candidate after Warriors failed pursuit

Brooklyn Nets star Michael Porter Jr. is a potential trade candidate if no contract extension will be made in the offseason.

The official offseason is yet to begin out of the ongoing 2026 NBA Finals matchup between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, but there are already a handful of names to watch that might get moved on the market.

According to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, Michael Porter Jr. will be pursued for a potential trade if he and the Brooklyn Nets do not reach a contract extension this offseason.

"With Porter Jr. entering the prime of his career and the Nets in the midst of a rebuild, executives across the league have always questioned if their timelines would fit beyond his current contract," Scotto wrote.

"If the Nets don’t agree to an extension with Porter Jr., teams around the league are expected to poke around on his trade availability."

Warriors pursued Michael Porter Jr. deal last deadline

Apparently, as added by Scotto, the Golden State Warriors are one of a handful of teams that attempted to go after Michael Porter Jr. last February's trade deadline. The Dubs considered parting ways with a first-round asset, but no deal ultimately materialized as the star forward remained in Brooklyn.

"Porter Jr., who turns 28 on June 29th, drew trade interest from teams, including the Golden State Warriors, as the deadline neared. The Warriors considered parting with a first-round pick for Porter Jr. hours before the deadline," Scotto wrote.

Porter Jr. enjoyed the best season of his career in Brooklyn, as he was acquired from last offseason's trade from the Denver Nuggets.

Entering the final year of his contract worth $40.81 million, he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 52 games played.
