Lackey’s athleticism also set him apart from other catching prospects. Despite playing one of baseball’s most demanding positions, he stole 15 bases and showcased elite speed rarely seen behind the plate. His power was equally impressive, including two home runs that traveled more than 450 feet during the Atlanta Regional.

Defensively, Lackey proved just as valuable. He threw out six attempted base stealers and recorded five back-pick outs, making opponents think twice before testing his arm. His leadership behind the plate also played a significant role in Georgia Tech’s pitching success, helping the Yellow Jackets post a 4.36 ERA in ACC play, the best mark in the conference.

Scouts praise Lackey for his rare combination of hitting ability, power, athleticism, defensive instincts, and leadership. With the MLB Draft just weeks away, many evaluators believe he has separated himself from the rest of the field.

While several talented prospects remain in contention, all signs point toward Vahn Lackey hearing his name called first on draft night.
