San Antonio has now blown five double-digit leads this postseason, including Game 4, tying the record for a single playoff run in the play-by-play era and matching the 2003 Spurs, who went on to win the NBA Finals.
The San Antonio Spurs suffered a historic collapse, while the New York Knicks made NBA history and are now just one win away from their first title since 1973.
In Game 4, the Knicks erased a 29-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat the Spurs 107-106, sealing the comeback on OG Anunoby's tip-in with just 1.2 seconds remaining. With the win, New York now leads the series 3-1.
For the Spurs, the loss adds to an unwanted postseason record.
According to Keerthika Uthayakumar, San Antonio has now blown five double-digit leads this postseason – tied for the most in a single playoff run in the play-by-play era.
The only other team to do so was the 2003 Spurs. That season ended with San Antonio beating the New Jersey Nets 4-2 in the 2003 NBA Finals.
How unusual this Knicks' comeback really is
The numbers highlight just how rare such collapses are.
In the past 30 years of playoff data, NBA teams were 4-750 when trailing by 20 or more points in the fourth quarter. With this victory, the Knicks improved that mark to 5-750, becoming the second team this postseason to pull off such a comeback.
Now facing elimination, the Spurs will try to extend their season in Game 5 on Saturday, June 13, with tip-off set for 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. local time).
