Chelsea have been tipped to make a surprise move for Jeremie Frimpong this summer, with former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta suggesting a reunion between the Dutch defender and incoming Blues boss Xabi Alonso could benefit both player and club.
Frimpong enjoyed the most successful spell of his career under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, playing a key role in the German side’s historic domestic double-winning campaign before securing a move to Liverpool. However, the 25-year-old has endured a difficult first season at Anfield, with injuries and inconsistent form limiting his impact.
Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, Mendieta backed CHELSEA to explore a deal, arguing that managers often look to trusted former players when taking over a new club. He believes Frimpong could rediscover his best form by working again under Alonso
“Jeremie Frimpong could be a good asset for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea,” he said. “Managers have players they trust from previous clubs and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again
“We often see players reuniting with former coaches for that reason, especially if things aren’t going well for those players like Frimpong at Liverpool.
“It’s a way of getting them back, to form hoping you can get the maximum out of the player and help you win things. I’m sure Chelsea will be active again in the market, they have to let players leave and bring new players in to suit the new coach.”
Frimpong’s attacking qualities could make him an attractive option. The Netherlands international excelled as an advanced wing-back under Alonso at Leverkusen, contributing goals and assists while operating in a high-intensity system.
His versatility and familiarity with Alonso’s demands are viewed as potential advantages should Chelsea enter the market for a right-sided defender.
Any move would likely depend on Liverpool’s willingness to negotiate. Frimpong remains under a long-term contract and there has been no indication from the Merseyside club that he is available for transfer. Nevertheless, speculation has intensified amid suggestions that his first year in England did not meet expectations.
For now, the links remain speculative, but Mendieta’s comments have added fuel to rumours that CHELSEA could look to reunite one of Alonso’s most trusted former performers with the manager as the club begins a new era at Stamford Bridge
