Liverpool make transfer u-turn after'agreeing personal terms'with Premier League star

Liverpool have reportedly abandoned plans to sign a top Premier League star despite previously agreeing terms with the player.

Only a year after leading the Reds to their 20th league title, former Liverpool manager Arne Slot was sacked last month.

Shortly after it was confirmed that former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was replacing the Dutchman, signing a two-year contract.

Since then fans have been eager to see how the Spanish manager will shape his Liverpool team and which players he will target in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Several players have been strongly linked with a move to Anfield, with the likes of RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande believed to be one of Liverpool's top targets.

One player that was previously believed to be a future Liverpool player is another RB Leipzig star in Lutsharel Geertruida, who impressed while on loan with Sunderland last season.

Reports in the winter suggested that Liverpool were considering a move for the Netherlands international following injuries to both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

At one point, it was even suggested that Geertruida and his representatives had held discussions with Liverpool and agreed terms for a move this summer.

However, according to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof, the deal appears to be off as the 25-year-old ‘currently has no contact whatsoever’ with Liverpool.

The report claims that Iraola's arrival means that the Merseyside club are no longer keen on signing the Dutch defender and will instead look elsewhere.

In a later post, Blaauwhof claims that Sunderland remain the most likely destination for Geertruida, with Regis Le Bris' side eager to sign him on a permanent deal rather than another loan.

The 25-year-old's contract with RB Leipzig expires in 2029 and is expected to demand a transfer fee around €20m (£17.3m).

Who will Andoni Iraola sign for Liverpool?

Since Iraola's appointment was confirmed, the Reds have already been linked with a host of high-profile transfers from the Spaniard's former club.

Bournemouth winger Rayan, who reportedly has a release clause in his contract which is reported to decrease with every passing transfer window, and teammate Eli Junior Kroupi are just two of the names linked with an Anfield move.

Diomande still appears to be the most likely first signing for Iraola, with reports suggesting that Liverpool have already made contact with the Bundesliga club over a potential move

However, the Germans insist he is not for sale and would only be willing to let him leave for around £112 million.

Meanwhile a spectacular return for former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez could be on the cards with the Uruguayan reportedly preparing to terminate his contract with current club Al Hilal to leave at the beginning of the summer transfer window.

This would open the door for the 26-year-old returning to Anfield as a free agent, with Nunez himself believed to be interested in the move.
