What Michael Carrick has said about bringing Marcus Rashford back to Man Utd after Barcelona bypass £26m buy option

Manchester United fans are beginning to ponder whether Marcus Rashford could be playing for the club again next season.

While unlikely, it’s never completely ruled out as long as he is on the Red Devils’ books.

Marcus Rashford and Barcelona: The state of play

Speculation has increased this week after it was announced that Barcelona would not be activating Rashford’s £26 million buy option, which would’ve seen his temporary spell turn into a long-term deal without any need for negotiations between the clubs.

However, the Blaugrana completing a surprising £70m acquisition of Anthony Gordon, who’s a like-for-like replacement for Rashford, means United’s former No.10 is no longer needed in Hansi Flick’s squad.

There is still a small chance that he stays in the event of new terms being agreed, but that’s looking increasingly unlikely, given United just want to cash in while his value is high.

Alas, it raises questions over where the 28-year-old will be plying his trade next season.

A pivotal summer window awaits Rashford

Any talks over his future will now have to wait until England’s World Cup campaign is finished. From there, however, Rashford will be returning to Carrington for the first time in a year to begin pre-season.

Reports have suggested that Bayern Munich, having missed out on Gordon themselves, would consider signing Rashford, but only if he agrees to lower his wages.

Towards the end of 2025/2026, Michael Carrick was put on the spot regarding the United graduate’s future.

He told reporters (as cited by the BBC): “There are decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation.

“But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.”
