Portland seeks public input on Moda Center renovations

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The city of Portland opened a [public survey](https://www.menti.com/alx87tdi92ai) this week seeking feedback on proposed renovations to the Moda Center.

City officials say the arena needs $573 million in renovations. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has proposed the city contribute $120 million. The rest would come from the county and state and is partially dependent on the Trail Blazers signing a new 20-year lease.

“It’s a good community place. So, I’m happy that there’s thoughts about getting it renovated,” said Reilly Higgs, a Portland resident.

The Moda Center, which is owned by the city, has not been updated in 30 years. City leaders say the renovations are important because the arena generates $600 million for the local economy each year.

Some residents have expressed concerns about the funding priorities.

“Our roads, we have potholes everywhere– especially downtown. Homelessness. I think there could be more money put into shelters,” Higgs said.

Edan Krolewicz helped create the website “Rip City, Not Rip Off” about the renovations. He said transparency is needed.

“We support renovating the Moda Center, we’ve always supported renovating it from the beginning. The question isn’t yes or no, it’s either a good deal or a bad deal,” Krolewicz said.

Krolewicz said Portlanders should not have to pay for the renovations.

“We are down to make an investment. If the public is going to make an investment, we need to know what our return is gonna look like,” he said.

City officials plan to meet with the public for face-to-face conversations about funding the renovations in the coming weeks.
