Ravens' minicamp "fireworks" highlights the edge Baltimore has been missing

Things are getting heated on the field for the Baltimore Ravens. We’ve hit minicamp and are one step closer to training camp. That means live contact is looming, and by the sounds of it, two players are very eager for that: Zion Young and Emery Jones Jr.

Young and Jones are two young players fighting for a spot. Young was drafted in the second round this year, and Jones was a third-round pick in 2025. For Young, we already know the fire he brings, and he may have gotten a little too excited in a rep against Jones. The two got into a light altercation during Tuesday's practice.

We have our first semblance of mini post-whistle fireworks at Ravens minicamp. OLB Zion Young gave second-year OL Emery Jones Jr., a little extra shove at end of play…as the two players walked back to their respective huddles, Jones got in Young’s face and the rookie OLB didn’t…

Anytime you see a fight break out, you might be taken aback. However, this might actually be great news for Baltimore. That’s two players showing a clear competitive edge. The team desperately needs that.

Baltimore Ravens’ minicamp scuffle shows that bully-ball is finally back

Sometimes you need a bit of youthful energy to bring a team back to life. The Ravens made a transition to the youth movement with their coaching hires this offseason, and now we’re seeing emotion shown on the field.

Guys like Young and Jones are coming into the NFL trying to prove themselves, and evidently, they’ll do whatever it takes to stand out. Even if that results in a scuffle, that’s just competition. That’s what football is all about, and that’s what Baltimore has kind of lacked.

It helps knowing that the passion is coming from two areas that were absolutely horrendous in 2025, too.

The Ravens had quite possibly the worst offensive guard play last season. You usually expect the offensive line to be the bullies of the offense. Instead, the duo of Daniel Faalele and Andrew Vorhees were the ones being bullied…endlessly. While Jones might not start in 2026, it’s nice to see a tone-setter along the interior.

As for the pass rush, they were almost nonexistent, totaling an absolutely abysmal 30 sacks (tied third-worst in the NFL) in 2025. They’ve brought in some major upgrades like Trey Hendrickson, but through the past month of offseason practices, it’s actually Young who’s created the most headlines. The 22-year-old is the exact kind of presence you’d expect to see on a Ravens’ defensive front. He brings the nasty—kind of Terrell Suggs-esque. It's very refreshing to see.

All offseason, people have spoken about the Ravens needing to get back to being the bully. They lacked ferocity and relentlessness. It looks like that’s back, though. It’s taken no time at all to shine through at minicamp.
