📰 News we're reading
1. MTA Debuts World Cup-Themed Subway Trains In NYC (patch.com) — New Yorkers riding the subway will start seeing colorful World Cup-themed trains as the MTA rolls out wraps representing all 48 participating countries across several lines. Developed with the FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ Host Committee and City Hall, the designs by local studio Burn & Broad highlight global flags on familiar routes like the 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, A, E, and F, celebrating the city's international spirit.
2. MSG Sports Blast NYPD, Mamdani Over Security Zone At NBA Finals Watch Party (patch.com) — Knicks fans heading to Midtown should expect tight NYPD security around Madison Square Garden, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani has limited Wednesday's NBA Finals watch party to 1,000 ticketed attendees. MSG Sports is sharply criticizing the mayor's security perimeter and crowd restrictions, arguing they shut out New Yorkers who want to celebrate outside the arena after recent disturbances at a Bryant Park watch event.
3. Former NYPD detective pleads guilty to sending inappropriate texts to victims, having sex with woman he arrested (ksro.com) — A former NYPD detective in New York has pleaded guilty to misconduct and receiving unlawful gratuities after sending sexually inappropriate texts to two women and having sex with a woman he'd just arrested. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg says the ex-detective, now on probation and barred from policing in New York state, abused his authority and violated basic standards for treating victims and suspects.
4. Trump booed at Madison Square Garden as he and Mamdani attend Knicks game (wksn.com) — Madison Square Garden was buzzing as New Yorkers watched the Knicks in the NBA Finals, with President Donald Trump and Mayor Zohran Mamdani both in the building and Trump drawing audible boos from parts of the crowd. The story details their separate appearances, evolving relationship, and the raucous postgame street scene in New York after the Knicks' loss.
5. U.S. Officials Told Colombia to Cancel President's Meeting With Mamdani (nytimes.com) — New Yorkers may be surprised to learn that a planned meeting in New York City between Colombia's president and local Mayor Zohran Mamdani was canceled at the urging of U.S. diplomats. Officials say Petro's restricted visa only allowed him to attend a U.N. Security Council session in Manhattan, after his earlier appearance at a pro-Palestinian rally led to its revocation.
