Sky: Not Anderson or Fernandes — Man Utd begin targeting entirely new PL star who’ll play vital World Cup role

Manchester United have shortlisted Fulham’s Antonee Robinson as a potential left-back option ahead of the transfer window opening.

That’s according to Sky Sports, which adds that Patrick Dorgu is expected to continue in a more attacking role next season.

INEOS land on Antonee Robinson to rival Luke Shaw

Alas, depth on the left-hand side of defence is essential.

While Luke Shaw completed a career-first last season by starting all 38 Premier League matches, there is an acceptance behind the scenes that his injury record leaves plenty to be desired, so there are concerns over whether he can be trusted to stay fit with the addition of Champions League football next term.

Dorgu would be the next option to deputise in Shaw’s absence, but as previously mentioned, his stellar showings as a winger have seemingly convinced Michael Carrick that he is better suited to that position further afield.

How Robinson has fared in recent years

Robinson, 28, boasts as much Premier League experience as you’d want from a new signing.

The full-back, who was born in Milton Keynes but represents the United States at international level, has spent his entire career in England, starting out in Everton’s academy before overseeing loans with Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic.

He arrived at Craven Cottage in 2020 and has since been an irreplaceable member of the starting XI, even donning the armband on numerous occasions.

Back in July 2023, Robinson inked a new deal to keep him tied to Fulham until the summer of 2028, so United would have to negotiate a potential fee with the Cottagers – and they’ll certainly want their money’s worth.

For the coming weeks, it goes without saying that a transfer will be at the back of the defender’s mind as he prepares to play an integral role for his nation, who are one of the host countries, during the World Cup.
