Chelsea have reportedly been linked with a surprise move for Liverpool star Jeremie Frimpong this summer.
The speculation has emerged after former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta floated the idea that a reunion between Frimpong and incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso could benefit all parties if Chelsea decide to strengthen their wing-back options.
Alonso, who previously worked with Frimpong at Leverkusen, is widely credited with helping to unlock the defender’s attacking output and tactical discipline.
Frimpong has developed into one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking full-backs, combining explosive pace with sharp movement in the final third. His ability to operate almost as an auxiliary winger has made him a standout performer in the Bundesliga and a long-standing target for several elite Premier League sides.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, Mendieta backed CHELSEA to explore a deal, arguing that managers often look to trusted former players when taking over a new club. He believes Frimpong could rediscover his best form by working again under Alonso
“Jeremie Frimpong could be a good asset for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea,” he said. “Managers have players they trust from previous clubs and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again
“We often see players reuniting with former coaches for that reason, especially if things aren’t going well for those players like Frimpong at Liverpool.
“It’s a way of getting them back, to form hoping you can get the maximum out of the player and help you win things. I’m sure Chelsea will be active again in the market, they have to let players leave and bring new players in to suit the new coach.”
CHELSEA already possess significant competition in wide defensive roles, with multiple internal options still being developed and integrated. Spending heavily on another attacking full-back may not be a priority compared to other areas of the pitch.
Finally, while Alonso’s presence adds narrative weight, managerial preference alone is rarely enough to drive a deal of this magnitude.
In reality, although Frimpong would be an exciting fit on paper, the financial, structural, and squad-balance hurdles mean this rumour is far more speculative than realistic.
