Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged the club to consider a bold summer move for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, suggesting the French international could be the ideal replacement should Enzo Fernandez depart Stamford Bridge in the coming transfer window.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in a British-record transfer from Benfica in 2023, has been the subject of growing speculation in recent weeks, with reports linking him to a potential move to Real Madrid.
Petit believes CHELSEAshould be prepared for all scenarios and has pointed to Camavinga as a high-profile option capable of stepping into Fernandez’s role if a sale is sanctioned.
The former France international argued that the midfielder possesses the technical quality, versatility and Champions League experience required to thrive in the Premier League: ‘Eduardo Camavinga in a swap deal with Enzo Fernandez? Why not?
‘Camavinga is still a very young player. He left Rennes for Madrid when he was eighteen years old and he has played for six or seven years for Real Madrid.
‘He has won some big trophies too. This guy has been an amazing young prospect. I cannot judge his level for the last two seasons with what’s going on at the club. You have so many players that didn’t play well for Real Madrid for different reasons.
‘Camavinga can be very good because we know that at Chelsea most of them are young players. He’s got experience. When you come from Real Madrid to Chelsea having won many trophies and played there for so many years and you play for the national team, you arrive at the club with experience that’s probably missing at Chelsea.
‘Camavinga is a talented player, he would be a great fit.’
Despite speculation, Real Madrid are understood to have no intention of sanctioning a sale, with the midfielder tied to a long-term contract and considered one of their core players for the next generation.
Any potential move would therefore require a significant financial package and a strong negotiating push from Chelsea.
Fernandez remains a key figure at Stamford Bridge and continues to be viewed as a central component of CHELSEA’s midfield rebuild. However, uncertainty surrounding squad restructuring and ongoing transfer interest has kept his name in circulation during the early stages of the summer window.
For now, Petit’s comments remain advisory rather than reflective of active negotiations.
Nevertheless, they have added further intrigue to Chelsea’s transfer plans, highlighting the possibility of a high-profile midfield reshuffle involving two of Europe’s most valuable young talents
