Taylor Swift’s appearance at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night, to cheer on a victorious New York Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, immediately amplified speculation that the pop superstar will soon use the famous Midtown Manhattan arena as the site for her wedding to Travis Kelce.
The usually well-sourced TMZ gossip site has been leading some of this speculation, breaking the news Tuesday that Swift and Kelce will be shelling out $3 million to rent the entire arena, which seats up to 20,000 people, for three days: the first day to set up, the second day for the wedding itself and the third to strike it all down. TMZ also said the wedding is scheduled to take place July 3 and the couple have invited 1,000 people.

And yet, friends of the superstar question these stories, according to a new report. They say the stories, probably being leaked to the media from Swift’s team, could be a “decoy” to distract from her real wedding plans, entertainment reporter Rob Shuter revealed on his Naughty But Nice Substack this week.

For one thing, staging a wedding in a venue like Madison Square Garden seems “completely out of character” for Swift, even if she has fond memories of performing there multiple times and supposedly wants a New York City wedding, Shuter has been told by these friends. While the 36-year-old Grammy winner clearly likes attention and is known for using her personal life in her music, she isn’t that kind of celebrity, one who would turn a meaningful private moment into a spectacle — even if in the service of fans, friends say.
“The songs, the Easter eggs, the social media posts—that’s part of her brand,” one insider told Shuter. “But that’s very different from getting married at one of the most famous venues in the world.”
“This doesn’t sound like Taylor,” another insider told Shuter. “It sounds like something the Kardashians would do.”
Yet another friend similarly expressed doubts about the Madison Square Garden idea, Shuter reported

“A wedding at Madison Square Garden feels like a production,” the person said. “Not a wedding.”
“Are they selling tickets?” a friend joked. “Is there a Ticketmaster partnership? A livestream? That’s why people aren’t buying it.”
Several friends told Shuter that the Madison Square Garden story may serve another purpose.
“Most people I know think it’s a decoy,” a source told Shuter. “The theory is guests will be told to meet at MSG, then they’re put on buses and taken somewhere else.”
To bolster its Madison Square Garden report, TMZ said the arena has “several dark days” on its calendar before July 3, which could presumably be used to set up for Swift’s big day. The singer and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end have already issued their invitations to more than 1,000 guests over the phone or via text to ensure privacy, Page Six also has reported. The guest list reportedly includes Karlie Kloss, Zoë Kravitz, Ed Sheeran, the Haim sisters, Suki Waterhouse, Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez.
Privacy is a key reason that Swift and Kelce might choose Madison Square Garden as their wedding venue, the New York Times also reported. The arena has a highly controlled environment with an extensive security infrastructure.
“The Garden would offer a level of privacy and protection that other event spaces could not match,” the New York Times said. “And with enough money and imagination, even an iconic arena can be transformed into a wedding venue.”
But the New York Times said there are several other local venues, such as the Casa Cipriani event space overlooking New York Harbor, that also could serve the couple, if it’s true that Swift is set on saying “I do” in the Big Apple. The singer is known for her love for New York: She owns a massive compound in the TriBeCa neighborhood and her 2014 song, “Welcome to New York,” is an ode to the city, the Times said.
Meanwhile, Swift may be leaving clues that a secret wedding could take place as soon as this weekend — and not in New York City, according to Cosmopolitan, citing a June 4 Us Weekly report.
With a a degree of certainty, Us Weekly said June 13 would be a good bet for the wedding because Swift famously considers 13 a lucky number. Sources also told Us Weekly that the festivities could be split between Swift’s $18 million Rhode Island mansion and Ocean House, a five-star seaside resort nearby.
“The guest list grew, so the ceremony and private gatherings associated with the wedding (will be split between the venues),” as insider told Us Weekly. Of course, Swift also may have worked out alternate plans, while Cosmopolitan said that a number of fans go along with the theory advanced by the friends who spoke to Shuter: the reported Madison Square Garden booking is, in fact, a “decoy” for her real wedding plans.
