Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella could reportedly be on the move this summer, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming that an exit from Stamford Bridge remains a genuine possibility amid growing interest from clubs in Spain.
Romano’s update has added fresh momentum to speculation surrounding Cucurella’s long-term future, suggesting that while no formal decision has been made, the player is attracting attention from La Liga sides monitoring his situation closely.
After a mixed spell in West London since his high-profile move from Brighton, the Spanish international is now understood to be weighing up his options ahead of a crucial summer window.
Cucurella’s time at CHELSEA has been defined by inconsistency, with flashes of his trademark energy and aggression offset by periods of uncertainty in form and role stability. Under multiple managerial changes, he has often been deployed in different tactical systems, which has impacted his ability to fully settle into a defined role at left-back or wing-back.
Despite that, his work rate, versatility, and defensive intelligence remain highly valued traits, particularly in systems that require full-backs to step into midfield or invert during build-up phases.
Interest from Spain is therefore seen as logical, given his technical background and comfort in possession-based football, Romano said: “Chelsea are not under pressure to sell and remain fully in control of the situation. A strong offer would be required to open the door to a transfer.
“There is significant interest in Cucurella from Spain and the feeling is that a move back to his home country would be the most likely outcome if he decides to leave Chelsea.
“This could include developments involving FC Barcelona, although nothing is advanced at this stage. The presence of Alejandro Balde means there is currently no active move.
“Meanwhile, Atletico de Madrid have always admired Cucurella. Key figures within the club have long been fans of the player and he remains on their radar. Once again, any potential move would depend on the right proposal arriving for both Chelsea and the player.”
Should Chelsea let Cucurella leave?
If Cucurella actively wants a return to Spain, CHELSEA should seriously consider allowing the move to happen. Modern squad building relies heavily on players being fully committed to their roles, and any lingering uncertainty can disrupt long-term planning.
Cucurella has never lacked effort or professionalism, but his Chelsea career has shown that environment matters significantly to his performance level. A return to La Liga—where he previously thrived in more settled tactical systems—could help him regain consistency and confidence.
From Chelsea’s perspective, holding onto a player who is not fully aligned with the project rarely benefits either party. If a suitable offer arrives, reinvesting those funds into a more natural system fit could be more productive than persisting with an uncertain fit.
