Man United have been linked with a move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, but the latest transfer news out of Old Trafford tells a very different story.

The rumour that United were quick to deny

As reported by Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, United want to sign Romero and are preparing a formal offer for the Spurs captain. The claim gained traction fast given how unsettled Romero’s situation at Tottenham already was. His future had been in serious doubt since January, after he flew back to Argentina just before Spurs’ relegation battle on the final day. That decision went down very badly inside the club.

Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 for £47m and has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs. He reads the game sharply, wins his duels, and commands his backline with an authority United have sorely lacked, particularly last season, when de Ligt missed the majority of the campaign through injury, leaving Carrick’s defence badly exposed.

Romero’s relationship with Lisandro Martinez is another thing working in his favour. The two have partnered regularly for Argentina and built a genuine understanding between them. That kind of chemistry is rare. United cannot manufacture it through the transfer market alone.

Cristian Romero’s 2025/26 stats,as per FotMob:

Competition Appearances Tackles Interceptions Clean Sheets Duels Won%

Premier League 23 58 30 4 66.2%

UCL 8 11 8 4 63.0%

Why United have moved on from Cristian Romero?

United, however, have been quick to push back on the story. As reported by Goal, United are not preparing a bid, calling the reports from Argentina flat-out wrong. Rather than moving for a centre-back, the latest Man United news shows midfield is the clear priority this summer, with a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva already wrapped up and talks underway with West Ham over Mateus Fernandes.

Michael Carrick has a lot of work to do in midfield this summer. Casemiro is leaving, Ugarte is set to go too, and Fabrizio Romano says at least two midfield signings are on the way before the window ends. Paying €65m for Romero on top of all that would blow the budget and make the whole plan fall apart. The cost alone tells you why United have walked away from this idea.

Selling Romero to a Premier League rival was never going to be easy for Tottenham in the first place. Despite the fallout at the end of the season, Spurs still made him club captain and his reported £50m release clause is only valid for clubs outside England. So any bid from Man United would have needed Spurs to agree a whole new fee on top of that.

What comes next for Romero this summer?

With United out of the picture, other clubs have moved quickly to position themselves for Cristian Romero. As reported by Goal, Barcelona lead the race and have kept close tabs on his situation throughout the season, while Chelsea joined the chase after Enzo Fernandez reportedly told the club to sign his Argentina teammate. Atletico Madrid cooled their interest once they pushed ahead with a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie.

The World Cup complicates Tottenham’s plans more than most realise. Romero will likely start for Argentina as they defend their title, so Spurs cannot push anything forward until the football finishes in July. Brighton’s Van Hecke needs to arrive before Romero can leave, and both clubs know that one move depends entirely on the other. Until Spurs sort both deals out, Romero’s summer will stay in limbo.
