Broncos give head coach Sean Payton a massive new contract

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton isn’t going anywhere.

The Broncos have given Payton a new five-year contract the ties him to the team through the 2030 NFL season. His old deal had two years left on it, but this new one reportedly replaces that.

Payton is entering his fourth year leading Denver and now has stability that will keep him with the Broncos for many seasons to come.

“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Broncos CEO and owner Greg Penner said in a release from the team. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations.

Payton went 8-9 his first season with the Broncos and then cut QB Russell Wilson and took on the largest (at the time) dead cap hit in NFL history.

He drafted quarterback Bo Nix and Denver made the playoffs in 2024 with a 10-7 record. The climb continued in 2025, going 14-3 and reaching the AFC Championship Game. The Broncos fell to New England, playing without Nix who had broken his ankle the week before against the Bills.

“We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our progress during such an exciting time for the Broncos,” Penner added.

The Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group gave GM George Paton a new contract this offseason and now Sean Payton has inked one as well.

The 62-year-old won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints after the 2009 season and is looking to become the first head coach in NFL history to win a championship leading two different teams.

This ensures that Sean Payton will be the head coach of the Broncos as Nix rolls into the prime of his career and an elite Broncos defense is in place.

Denver is wrapping up its second week of OTAs and Payton is slated to meet with the media this afternoon. He’ll be asked about his new contract and what it means to stay in the Mile High City for the foreseeable future.

It’s certainly an exciting day in Broncos Country as the franchise has stability that about half the league would dream of. The next step is winning a fourth Lombardi Trophy either this season or sometime soon.
